DIY Skin Care

You probably already know that your skin is the largest organ in our body.  Taking care of it is super important to the aging process and helping us feel like we are staying young or at the very least aging gracefully.

While there are many fabulous natural skincare products out there, they can be super expensive and not always a reasonable choice when trying to stay on a budget.

Five years ago, I would never have thought I would have to give up my skincare routine for something different.  I loved my facial cleanser and moisturizer AND the company that I bought them from.   It seems all good things come to an end eventually.  The company that I used decided to “improve” the already great product.  My sensitive skin did not like their improvement.

So, I started on a search for something new.  That is always an expensive endeavor when one has sensitive skin but here is what I discovered.

Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated!

DIY Facial Cleanser and Moisturizer

My go to now for a facial cleanser is honey!  Yes, that’s right!  Honey!

I use raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized honey.  I also try to choose honey that is native to where I live.

Honey is the perfect facial cleanser.  I use it morning and night and apply just like I would a regular face cleanser.  I keep the honey in a small container, about a week’s worth.  I put about teaspoon of honey on my wet fingers, rub them together a little and apply to my face in a circular motion.  Then, I wash it off with warm water and a washcloth.  It works fabulous for cleansing the skin and removing makeup.

Honey has the benefits of being anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and it provides great moisture for the skin.

I follow this cleansing in the morning with coconut oil and Yarrow/Pom essential oil.   There are so many uses and health benefits from using coconut oil.  One little Google search will bring up more information than you want to know.

I use ¼ cup of coconut oil and 15-20 drops of Yarrow/Pom.  Mix them together and store in a small glass jar.  It only takes a small amount when applying to your face.   I put a pea sized amount in my hand and let it melt with the warmth of my body, then apply it to my face and neck with the leftovers going on my hands and arms.  If your face feels greasy, you have used too much of your new moisturizer.

There is some controversy over whether coconut oil clogs the pores.  I personally don’t find it an issue.  You could use fractionated coconut oil with the Yarrow/Pom if this was a concern.   You will need 4 to 5 drops of fractionated coconut oil to 1 drop of Yarrow/Pom.  I actually prefer this method to regular coconut oil.

DIY Satin Hands

Another favorite DIY skincare is using a sugar scrub and the moisturizer above to recreate the Satin Hands technique.  You will need:

1 cup of evaporated cane sugar or granulated sugar
½ cup of coconut oil, melted or fractionated coconut oil

Mix all ingredients together and store in a glass container.  Use a small amount of the sugar scrub and rub all over hands for 20-30 seconds.  Rinse in warm water and follow up with a tiny bit of the DIY Moisturizer.

Healthy Hints:

Peppermint is energizing, supports focus, eases head tension, and supports the respiratory and digestive systems.

Wild Orange is uplifting of mood and eases anxious feelings

Yarrow/Pom is a fabulous support for the skin.  It also supports the hormonal and immune systems.
